Tom Ford’s FW 1995 collection jump-started Gucci’s transformation from moribund fashion house to cutting edge, much desired label. In the era of grunge, Ford returned glamour, sex and luxury to fashion.
One of the most famous looks from the collection was featured prominently in the advertising. ’90s supermodel Amber Valletta wore an electric blue mohair coat, velvet hiphuggers, tight satin shirt and a belt with oversized GGs. The outfit was such a hit, Madonna wore the entire ensemble at the MTV awards.

These Sigerson Morrison Gladiator Sandal Boots caused a sensation in 2009. They came in three different versions: knee height with high heel or flat heel and ankle height with high heel. We have the knee high, flat version in black leather. They will be offered for sale at our eBay store at the end of the month.
In the late 1990s, many young designers were hired to energize traditional fashion houses. Tom Ford/Gucci, Marc Jacobs/Louis Vuitton, John Galliano/Dior were among the most well known matches.
One of the more unusual pairings was Hermes and Martin Margiela. Margiela was hired by Hermes in 1998. The combination perplexed many people. Joan Juliet Buck, French Vogue’s Editor In Chief, felt the match made sense as both parties treasured craftsmanship. An AP correspondent described Margiela’s first Hermes collection as “conservative luxury meets grunge.” Standout pieces from the show included wool jackets and tunics with plunging V-necks.

Halston was one of America’s most important designers. He was as famous for his glamorous, decadent lifestyle as he was for his elegant, streamlined clothes.
Last year, the television show “Ugly Betty” featured a vintage Halston “Fireworks” dress circa 1980. The dress is very rare as only five were made. It was worn by Keira Knightly, the guest star. Her character agreed to pose for the cover of Mode only if she could wear the dress.
We recently received a vintage Halston jacket. It is reminiscent of the “Fireworks” dress. The jacket is made out of black mesh with sequins whereas the dress is black chiffon with sequins and beads. This vintage beauty is in outstanding condition considering its age. We will be posting it at our eBay store at the end of the month. Don’t miss it!
